Hi Lo Dig gives you a true two-level dig concept on the trips side, with the outside receiver running a deep dig that settles across the middle and the slot receiver working an underneath dig to the opposite hash, creating a natural hi lo read against zone drops. The backside X runs a deep vertical to hold the corner and safety, while the TE releases into a quick out at the boundary as a checkdown or man beater against off coverage. This is primarily a zone beater built to attack Tampa 2 and Cover 3 hole defenders, with the QB progression starting at the deep dig, working down to the underneath dig, then checking to the TE flat route if both digs are covered.
Identify the middle linebacker depth at the snap, since a shallow drop signals he will jump the underneath dig and take away the first read. Watch the deep safety rotation post snap, if he stays over the top of the trips side the deep dig will be contested and you should reset to the underneath route. Cover 3 with a hard flowing hole defender is the toughest shell against this concept because it clogs both digs at the same depth. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by the backside X vertical route. Watch for a user linebacker sitting in the passing lane between the two digs, since that lurk threat can undercut either throw if the QB stares down the read.
Look for two high safety shells pre snap since the deep dig from trips will split the seam between the hole defender and the deep safety.
If the defense shows single high, hot route the backside X vertical into a comeback to avoid throwing into the post safety help.
Use the TE out route as your answer against man coverage or when the mike linebacker sinks too deep on the underneath dig.
This works well after calling Mtn Triple Slants or Quick Unders earlier in a series, since the underneath crossers condition linebackers to jump short routes and open up the deeper dig.
Best called on second and long or third and medium when the defense is more likely to sit in zone shells rather than blitz.
