RPO Zone Peek out of Shotgun Split Close Pro is a true run-pass option built around an inside zone look to the backfield with a peek route tacked on for the quarterback to read post-snap. The diagram shows the offensive line executing a zone blocking scheme with the running back taking a jet-style motion path before cutting upfield behind the line, while the peek receiver releases outside and stems vertically up the numbers, and a second receiver runs a vertical seam route behind that concept. This is an RPO designed to attack light boxes: if the defense stays home against the run, the quarterback pulls and throws the peek route for an explosive gain, and if the box is heavy, he hands off into the zone run for a clean gap read.
Defensive Reads
Watch the slot corner or overhang defender at the snap since aggressive run fits from that alignment are the key trigger for the quarterback to throw the peek route instead of handing off. Base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts with linebackers stacked tight to the line are vulnerable because they bite on the zone action and open up the vertical peek route behind them. Man coverage on the outside receivers combined with a light box invites the quarterback to throw immediately, so disciplined outside corners who stay on top of their routes without helping in run support shut this down. Zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 with safeties reading run first can be exposed if the deep defender flows toward the line, so keep safety eyes on the quarterback's mesh point rather than the backfield. Blitzes that send extra defenders off the edge or through the A-gap force a quick decision, so if the user controls a linebacker and sits in a lurk spot underneath the peek route, that take away the RPO throw and forces the give into a stacked box.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, count the box defenders before the snap and identify if the defense is in a run-friendly front with six or fewer in the box, which tells you to keep your eyes on the run read first.
If the slot or overhang defender crashes down hard on the run action, immediately pull the ball and throw the peek route before the defender can recover downfield.
Use this play on early downs like first and ten to stay on schedule since it gives you a low risk answer against both run blitzes and soft coverage looks.
Pair this play with Inside Zone Split earlier in a series so the defense starts keying run fits, then come back to RPO Zone Peek to punish overaggressive linebackers with the peek throw.
Mix in HB Angle or HB Option from the same set to keep defenders guessing between backfield touches and the RPO read, which sets up big plays once the defense commits to stopping the ground game.
