Y Curl out of Shotgun Split Close Pro is a curl-flat zone beater built around the tight end sitting down at the sticks while the outside receivers occupy the boundary with a curl and flat combo. The 21 personnel keeps two backs in the backfield for check release protection, giving the quarterback a clean pocket to work through his reads against both zone and man coverage. The primary read progression starts with the Y curl over the middle, works to the flat route underneath as a man beater against off coverage, and finishes with a backside curl or comeback as the outlet against zone drops.
Defensive Reads
Read the middle linebacker depth at the snap. If he sinks hard into the curl zone immediately, the defense is likely playing Cover 3 or Cover 4 and you should reroute to the flat or backside comeback. Watch the flat defender's initial step. A hard jump on the flat route signals man coverage or a Cover 2 cloud call, which means the Y curl becomes the primary window since the underneath defender vacated. Identify user controlled defenders sitting in the intermediate zone before the snap. If a human player is spying the curl area, expect a lurk and be ready to hold the ball or check down to the checkdown back. This play struggles against Cover 6 or match zone concepts where the flat and curl defenders trade off assignments based on route distribution, since it can create a natural double team on the Y curl. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge will collapse the pocket before the curl route breaks, so identify pre-snap overload fronts and be ready to check to a quicker hitter or use the back for a check release outlet.
Usage Tips
Attack this play on second and medium to third and short since the curl route sits down right in the zone window that most defenses leave open between five and eight yards.
Presnap, check for two high safeties. If the shell stays split you are reading zone and should hitch up your throw timing to let the Y curl settle before delivering.
Against man coverage, hot route the flat back into a quick out or speed out to create separation immediately off the snap rather than waiting on the curl to break.
Pair this with RPO Zone Peek or RPO Peek Cheat Wrap Go earlier in a series so the defense has to respect the run action, which opens up the intermediate window for the Y curl on the next call.
Use Y Curl Post from the same set as a hard counter once the defense starts jumping the curl route, since the double move off the same look punishes aggressive user lurk defenders.
