RPO Read Y Arrow lines up in Shotgun Doubles Off Close with 11 personnel, giving the QB a run-pass option built off the interior run action. The Y (TE/slot) runs an arrow route to the flat as the outside receiver on that side climbs vertically on a go route, stretching the defense high low, while the backside receiver runs a short in cut and the running back releases on a shallow drag underneath. The offensive line executes inside zone blocking to sell the run fake, and the QB reads the flat defender or a designated second level defender: if that defender crawls up or widens to the arrow, throw the go route or drag, and if he sits, hand off or throw the quick arrow for an easy conversion.
Defensive Reads
Watch the flat or overhang defender at the snap, if he steps up hard to fill the run lane the QB will pull and throw the arrow or drag underneath for a quick gain. Zone coverages that keep the underneath defenders sitting rather than crashing tend to shut down the pass side and force the offense into the run, so stay disciplined and do not bite on the run fake. Man coverage on the backside receiver is vulnerable to a quick out or speed cut if the defender is playing off, so corners need to stay square and avoid over committing to run support. Linebacker depth pre-snap matters, a linebacker cheating up toward the line signals run support priority and opens the vertical go route and arrow combo. User the alley defender or slot defender manually in competitive play to take away both the arrow and the run read simultaneously, forcing the QB into a tougher decision.
Usage Tips
Presnap, identify whether the slot corner or overhang defender is playing tight run support or sitting back in a zone shell, since that read determines whether you pull the ball or hand it off. Use this play on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) to stay balanced and keep the defense honest against your other run and RPO calls in this set. Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or speed out against man coverage if you see the corner playing tight technique with no help over the top.
