Zone Fake Jet is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Doubles Off Close that opens with jet motion across the formation to freeze linebackers and sell the run fake before the QB pulls it back to throw. The diagram shows the offensive line sliding in a zone blocking action to the play side while the backfield fake pulls defenders toward the jet motion, creating a receiver breaking free up the sideline on a vertical route behind the fake. This is a play-action shot play designed to exploit aggressive run defenses and linebackers who bite hard on the jet sweep action, with the primary read being the vertical receiver up the boundary once the play-action fake clears the underneath defenders.
Defensive Reads
Key on the flow of the linebackers at the snap, if they crash hard toward the jet motion side the play-action fake is working and the vertical route should come open. Watch the safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety who bites down on run action leaves the deep boundary exposed for the explosive completion. Check if the play side cornerback is playing off man or zone, since a corner sitting on shorter routes can be beaten over the top by the vertical release. Look for teams that blitz off the edge or run a nano blitz, since the play-action hold can get the quarterback hit before he sets up if the fake does not sell fast enough against pressure. Zone shells with two deep safeties who do not respect the run fake will limit this play, forcing the quarterback into a lower value checkdown read.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs like first and second and short to medium yardage when the defense is showing run support or has stacked the box expecting inside zone. Watch for linebackers creeping up pre-snap or safeties rotating down into the box, since those are the shells this play-action punishes hardest. Pair this with Inside Zone and PA Jet Sweep earlier in a drive so the defense keys on the jet motion as a run threat, then hit them with this play once they start flowing hard to the motion side. If the safety stays deep and does not bite, be ready to hot route the underneath receiver into a quick out or check it down since the deep shot may be covered. Use this on play-action heavy sequences against man coverage teams that like to run defenders through motion, since the fake creates natural separation against trailing defenders.
