PA Jet Sweep out of Doubles Off Close uses jet motion across the formation to sell the sweep fake before the QB pulls it back for a play-action pass shot. Post snap the deep out route breaks toward the sideline off the far outside receiver while the vertical route climbs the numbers on that same side, and the backside receiver runs a deep comeback breaking back to the QB, with the crosser working from the opposite side of the formation across the field underneath the linebackers. The offensive line pass protects in front of the fake, and the primary read progression starts with the deep comeback on the backside before working to the underneath crosser and then the vertical shot if the safety bites on the run action.
Defensive Reads
Key the flow of the linebackers at the snap, if they crash hard toward the jet motion and bite on the fake, that confirms the play-action pass is live and you need to sink your zone drops immediately. Watch the deep comeback route on the backside, this is the primary answer against man coverage since it creates instant separation when the corner is playing tight technique expecting run support. Identify single high shells pre-snap, since a lone deep safety who steps up on the sweep fake leaves the vertical route on the opposite side wide open for a big play. User a defender to lurk the underneath crosser if you suspect play-action, this route sits right in the throwing lane and is often the first checkdown option. Disguise blitz packages carefully, if you show a run blitz look pre-snap and stay disciplined post-snap without crashing down, you take away both the sweep and the play-action shot by forcing the QB to hold the ball longer.
Usage Tips
Sell the jet sweep with a fast press of the snap timing so linebackers and safeties commit downhill before the ball is pulled back for the pass. Use this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage when defenses are primed to stop the run and are more likely to bite on the fake. Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see a single high safety cheating toward the box or two safeties creeping down, that is your green light to throw off the play fake. Hot route the underneath crosser into a shallow drag if you are facing a hard match zone that jumps outside breaking routes, giving you a quick answer against blitz looks. Pair this with straight Inside Zone and Zone Fake Jet earlier in a series so the defense is conditioned to sell out on the sweep action, making the play-action shot far more effective later in the drive.
