Slot Cross is a five man route concept out of Shotgun Doubles Flex Wk Swap that attacks the middle of the field with a deep crosser and a shallow drag stacked underneath it. The outside receiver to the left runs a corner-out breaking route while the slot runs the deep crossing route through the numbers, the tight end works a shallow drag underneath from the opposite side, the backside X runs a vertical seam, and the running back releases into a swing route out of the backfield for a checkdown or screen outlet. This is a man beater at its core, using the crossing traffic to shake off tight coverage, but the layered shallow to deep crosser combo also creates natural picks against zone defenders sitting in intermediate windows. The primary read progression starts with the deep crosser working left to right, moves down to the shallow drag as the outlet against pressure, and checks off to the running back swing if both are covered.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, look at the safety alignment: if both safeties are deep with even spacing, expect zone coverage that allows the deep crosser to find soft spots between linebacker drops. If you see man coverage indicators like corners lined up tight on receivers with no help over the top, the deep crosser and drag combo should win quickly against trailing defenders. Post-snap, watch for a user controlled defender sitting in the middle of the field as a lurk threat, since that player can jump the deep crosser or drag if the quarterback stares it down too long. Against zone blitz packages, the shallow drag becomes the quickest answer since it clears the line of scrimmage before extra rushers arrive. This play is vulnerable to Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with disciplined linebackers who sink under the crosser, so be ready to check down to the running back swing if the middle of the field is clogged.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing man or zone by checking the slot corner depth and linebacker alignment over the crossing routes. Against man coverage, trust the deep crosser to separate from trailing defenders since the natural rub from the shallow drag disrupts their leverage. Use the running back swing as a built in checkdown against heavy blitz looks or when the defense drops eight into coverage, since the crosser and drag take time to develop. This play works best on second and medium to second and long when you have time to let the deep crosser sit down against zone or continue working across the field against man. Pair this with Mtn Drive or Mtn Mesh Y Corner from the same set to keep defenses guessing between shallow crossing combos and deeper attacking routes off similar formation looks. If you see a defense keying on the crosser after repeated reps, switch to Mtn HB Cross Screen or Mtn PA Y Middle Read to counter their over pursuit.
