Mtn HB Sweep is a jet motion run play out of Shotgun Doubles Flex Wk Swap that sends the flexed receiver in motion across the formation before the snap to create a sweep action toward that side. The offensive line and TE execute a zone-blocking scheme that flows to the play side, pulling the edge to create a running lane while the HB takes the handoff and follows the motion man's path outside. This is a run play designed to attack the perimeter, exploiting overpursuit from a defense that is either crashing down on inside runs or getting caught out of position by the pre-snap motion. The primary read progression starts with identifying the play side edge defender and force player, then reading the block of the pulling lineman to decide whether to bounce outside or cut up through the alley.
Defensive Reads
Watch the play side defensive end or outside linebacker pre-snap, if he crashes down hard on motion this play can bounce outside for a big gain. Check safety depth and rotation before the snap, a single high safety who bites on run action leaves the sweep lane wide open on the perimeter. Post-snap, key the flow of the linebackers, if they overpursue toward the motion man's original alignment the cutback lane opens for the HB. This play is vulnerable to disciplined edge defenders who stay home and squeeze the sweep, especially in odd fronts that keep an extra body outside. Nickel and dime packages with fast slot corners playing outside contain can shut this down quickly, so avoid calling it into obvious sub-package run fronts.
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap motion to bait linebackers into flowing hard one direction, then check if the defense shifts its front to match before the snap.
If the defense shows a hard edge set or extra defenders outside the tackle box, consider audibling to Mtn HB Cross Screen or HB Counter to attack the opposite gap.
This play hits best on early downs (first or second and short to medium) when defenses are more likely to sit in base run fronts rather than nickel or dime looks.
Pair Mtn HB Sweep with Mtn PA Y Middle Read in your play-calling sequence so the defense has to respect both the outside run and the play-action shot off similar motion.
