Mtn Drive lines up in Shotgun Doubles Flex Wk Swap with 11 personnel and uses jet motion across the backfield before the snap to help identify man versus zone coverage. The backside receiver runs a deep dig that crosses the field while the inside slot works a shallow drive route underneath, and the outside receiver on the strongside clears vertically before breaking back to the sideline off a deep out, giving the quarterback a full field stretch from shallow to deep. The motion man releases up the sideline as a checkdown or fourth option, and the drive concept on the backside combined with the deep dig makes this a strong Cover 4 beater. Defensive Reads
Check safety depth before the snap, if both safeties are sitting deep and split wide it signals Cover 4 or Cover 2, which this play is designed to exploit with the deep dig. Watch the linebacker assigned to the motion man, if he sprints to match the jet motion it reveals man coverage and tells you to trust the deep dig on the backside. Look for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, since he can jump the drive route if the quarterback stares it down too long. Against a two high shell with press corners, the deep out on the strongside can get squeezed, so be ready to climb the progression back to the dig quickly. Blitz-heavy fronts with man coverage behind them are the toughest matchup since the quick underneath drive route becomes the only quick answer, so recognize overload blitz looks pre-snap and get the ball out fast.
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap jet motion to bait linebackers and safeties into showing their hand, if a defender follows the motion man across the formation it confirms man coverage and opens up the deep dig against a trailing defender. Against Cover 4 shells, prioritize the deep dig since it attacks the seam between the deep quarter defenders and the underneath linebackers. On third and medium to long, this play excels because the drive route sits right at the sticks while the dig works over the top for an explosive gain. Pair this call with Mtn Mesh Y Corner or Mtn Slot Post in the same set to keep the defense guessing between crossing concepts and vertical shots off similar motion and formation looks. If the defense shows heavy blitz pre-snap, consider hot routing the drive route into a quick option or slide protection to buy time for the dig to develop.
