Mtn HB Cross Screen is an HB screen play out of Shotgun Doubles Flex Wk Swap with a pre-snap motion tag that swaps the backfield alignment before the snap. The diagram shows two vertical seam or go routes from the top of the formation clearing out deep coverage, a crosser from the outside receiver sitting underneath as a man beater option, and the offensive line releasing to set up the screen wall to the flat for the HB. The primary read is the HB screen first, working from the wall of blockers to space, with the crosser as the secondary answer against man coverage if the screen is sniffed out.
Defensive Reads
Watch for defensive ends who consistently crash inside on the snap, since they will get to the screen too fast and blow it up before blockers set the wall. Man coverage on the two vertical routes clears space underneath, making this play vulnerable to a spy or a linebacker sitting flat footed reading the backfield. Zone coverage with linebackers dropping into short curl or hook zones can jump the screen if they diagnose the HB releasing late. Nano blitzes from the interior tend to get picked up by the screen blocking scheme, so aggressive user blitzes on the defensive line often backfire. Cover 2 or Cover 3 shells with a hard flat defender to the screen side are the biggest counter, since that defender can sit on the route and blow up the timing.
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or defensive back over the top, which tells you if the screen is covered before the snap.
Call this play on early downs or after a series of inside runs so linebackers are flowing downhill and away from the screen side.
If the defense shows heavy blitz pre-snap, trust the screen since the rushers will overrun the play and create the wall in space.
Pair this with Mtn Drive or Mtn Mesh Y Corner in the same set so the defense has to respect intermediate crossing routes and cannot key on the HB screen every snap.
Hot route the crosser into a deeper drag if you see zone defenders sitting in the shallow throwing lane, giving you a built in checkdown against soft zone shells.
