Mtn Drag is a motion-based pass play out of Shotgun Doubles Flex Wk Swap that uses pre-snap jet or shuffle motion across the formation before the snap. The diagram shows a shallow drag route crossing the field underneath, a deep vertical route from the outside receiver on the near side, a corner route breaking outside from the middle stack, and a deep in-cut route from the far outside receiver, while the running back stays in to help protect. Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and shell alignment since a two high shell suggests zone coverage underneath while a single high safety often signals man or a blitz look. Watch the linebacker assigned to the motion man, since if he mirrors the motion across the formation that confirms man coverage and the drag route becomes the primary answer. Post-snap, key any user-controlled defender sitting in the shallow zone or lurking near the drag route, since a smart user will jump the crossing route and bait a turnover. Cover 3 with an aggressive flat defender can undercut the drag route, so be ready to progress quickly to the corner route or the deep in-route if the shallow window closes. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is where this play hits hardest, since the corner and in-route routes stretch the field vertically and horizontally beyond what one deep defender can cover.
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, since a defender following the motion man confirms man coverage and tells you the drag route will have a favorable angle.
If the corner shows press man on the outside receiver running the vertical route, consider a hot route audible to a slant or hitch to prevent a jam disrupting the timing.
This play works best on second and medium to third and medium since it has a quick underlying answer with the drag route but also a chunk play built in with the corner and in-route.
Pair Mtn Drag with Mtn Drive or Mtn Mesh Y Corner in the same set so the defense has to respect both shallow crossing concepts and deeper option routes, keeping linebackers and safeties honest.
Against zone shells, hold the ball a beat longer and let the drag route settle in the void behind underneath zone defenders while linebackers flow toward the motion.
