Z Spot lines up out of the Bunch Trio Open in Shotgun with an isolated X receiver to the backside and a three-man bunch to the strong side. The isolated X runs a corner route up the sideline while the bunch executes the Spot concept: one receiver runs a quick flat route, another sits down on a hitch or spot route at the sticks, and the third climbs vertically before working outside on a corner breaker. This is a classic Cover 3 beater built on the spot concept, attacking the flat defender and hole defender with a high low read, and the primary progression starts with the spot route sitting in the underneath zone before working out to the flat and finally to the corner route on the backside if the underneath is jumped.
Watch the strong side linebacker or nickel defender at the snap, since Cover 3 zone drops will show a clear passing lane to the spot route. If the cornerback over the isolated X is playing hard outside shade, expect the corner route to be undercut, so be ready to reset to the flat. User controlled defenders sitting in the shallow hook zone can jump the spot route, so track any manual spy or lurk before releasing that throw. Man coverage with inside leverage on the bunch receivers signals a natural mismatch for the flat route since it clears space quickly against trail technique. Blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge shorten the window for the corner route, so prioritize the quick spot and flat combo when you see pressure at the line pre-snap.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing a single high safety look because that usually means Cover 3 and this concept eats that shell alive.
Key the flat defender first: if he widens with the flat route, the spot route sitting underneath him is your rhythm throw.
Use the backside corner route as a built-in answer to Cover 4 or Cover 2 rotation, since the isolated X can win one on one against a cornerback playing outside leverage.
Pair this play with Four Verticals or Dagger Swap X-Slant in the same set to keep defenses honest between horizontal stretch concepts and vertical shots.
Best called on third and short to third and medium, since the spot and flat combo gives you a high percentage checkdown while the corner route stays alive for an explosive gain.
