Breakdown
Four Verticals out of Bunch Trio Open sends all four eligible receivers vertical, with the bunch releasing into a seam, a skinny post, and an outside vertical while the backside X runs a straight go route up the sideline. The HB stays in to check release and leaks up the middle as a fifth option if the rush gets home, giving the quarterback a true five-man read against both zone and man coverage. This is a pure vertical stretch play designed to attack Cover 2 and Cover 3 by overloading the deep zones with four verticals, with the primary read starting on the seam route from the bunch working to the post, then bailing out to the checkdown underneath.
Defensive Reads
Watch for two deep safeties at the snap, if they stay split and do not rotate, the post from the bunch receiver has a natural window between the numbers. If the corners press at the line with no deep safety help over the top, expect man coverage and look to win the seam route on a quick vertical stem before the underneath defender can get a hand on it. Track the middle linebacker's depth pre-snap, a linebacker sitting shallow signals a possible Cover 3 with a deep third responsibility on the post, which invites a throw to the outside vertical or seam instead. User-controlled defenders often sit on the seam or post route to bait a throw, so if you see a defender hovering the middle of the field pre-snap or shifting late, work the outside vertical or the HB checkdown instead. A disguised blitz with man coverage behind it is the biggest threat to this concept, if the offensive line shows a hot protection call or the HB stays in as a blocker, get the ball out quickly to the shortest route in the progression.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two deep safeties or one, since this concept is built to punish Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells that cannot cover four verticals with only two or three deep defenders.
Key the safety rotation at the snap, if both safeties bail deep and the corners sink into zone, target the seam route from the bunch before the safety can get width to it.
Use the HB release as a checkdown against pressure or when the defense drops eight into coverage, this keeps the play viable on third and medium instead of forcing a low percentage deep shot.
Hot route the backside X to a comeback or hitch against aggressive man coverage with no safety help, since a pure go route can get squeezed by a corner playing outside leverage.
