Inside Zone out of Shotgun Bunch Trio Open is a zone run play design with the RB aligned next to the QB and a bunch trio set to one side. The offensive line steps in unison toward the play side, working combo blocks at the point of attack while the RB reads the flow of the down linemen to find the natural crease. This is a pure run play, not a play-action or RPO look, and the primary read progression starts with the play side double team at the point of attack before bending backside if the alley is clogged.
Defensive Reads
Attack this play with a fast flowing linebacker crew that can beat the offensive line to the point of attack before the double team seals the crease Stack the box with a safety in run support against light personnel groups to eliminate the cutback lane Sim pressure or a straight four man rush with disciplined gap integrity forces the RB to commit early and limits the backside bend Watch for the mike linebacker keying the center's first step, since a quick downhill trigger disrupts the zone flow Man coverage on the bunch trio can be baited into peeking the backfield, so a lurking user linebacker in the middle of the field is critical to shut down the cutback
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and only run Inside Zone into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the tackle box
Use the bunch trio alignment to bait linebackers into overpursuing toward the passing strength, which opens up cutback lanes on the backside
Hot route the play side wide receiver into a stalk or crack block if you see the corner sitting too close to the line in press alignment
Pair this run with Drive or Y Trail out of the same Bunch Trio Open set so the defense has to respect both run and pass tendencies from identical formations
Best called on early downs like first and ten or second and short when defenses are still keying formation tendencies instead of down and distance
