Flood Swap comes out of Shotgun Bunch Trio Open with a true three level flood concept to the bunch side and a lone out route from the backside X. The bunch trio runs a swap release into a corner route up top, a shallow drag that crosses under, and a flat route that settles at the sideline, stacking three vertical levels on one half of the field to overload a single defender or zone. Backside, the isolated receiver runs a quick out that gives you a hot alert against man pressure. This is a Cover 3 beater built to stress the flat defender and deep third corner simultaneously, and the primary read progression goes corner route first to the flat, then check down to the drag underneath if the deep and short zones are taken away.
Defensive Reads
Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he sinks with the drag or widens too far with the flat route, the corner route sitting behind him is uncontested for an explosive gain. Key the deep third corner or safety, if he stays flat footed reading the quarterback instead of turning to run with the corner route, that route wins outside for a chunk play. Against man coverage, look at how the defender assigned to the swap releasing receiver handles the traffic, a defender who gets picked or rerouted by teammates opens the corner route immediately. If the defense rotates to two high safeties post snap, expect the flat and drag to be your answer since the deep corner route may run into a safety rotating over the top. Beware disguised zone blitzes that drop a defensive lineman into the shallow drag lane, this can jump the checkdown route and force you to hold the ball longer than the concept wants.
Usage Tips
Pre snap, identify whether the defense is showing single high or two high safety alignment since this concept is built specifically to punish Cover 3 flat defenders who cannot cover both the flat route and the corner route breaking behind them.
If you see man coverage with the corner pressed on the bunch, the swap release creates natural traffic and rub, so trust the corner route to win late against trail technique.
Use the backside out route as your hot read versus blitz looks, especially when the defense shows blitz off the edge or brings extra pressure from depth, since it gets the ball out fast to the isolated X.
Pair this play with Y Trail or Dagger Swap X-Slant in your call sheet so the defense sees similar bunch action but has to respect both an underneath option and a vertical shot, keeping linebackers and safeties honest.
Best used on second and medium to third and short to medium since the flat and drag both offer easy completions if the corner is not there, and the corner route gives you a big play shot if the safety bites on run action or play action tendencies.
