Dagger Swap X-Slant comes out of the Shotgun Bunch Trio Open set with 11 personnel, using the bunch alignment to create natural rub picks against man coverage. The backside receiver runs a deep dig sitting behind the linebackers while the bunch releases a vertical seam clear-out paired with a corner route from the flat, and the underneath X-Slant crosses the field low to attack any vacated middle void. The primary read starts with the deep dig against the vertical clear-out (classic Dagger combo), then progresses to the X-Slant underneath if the middle linebacker widens or a safety bites on the seam, making this a strong Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify whether the safeties are showing two high or rotating to single high, since Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells are the primary vulnerabilities this concept targets. Watch the flat defender over the bunch, if he sinks with the corner route and vacates underneath, the X-Slant becomes an easy answer for the quarterback. Key the middle linebacker's depth at the snap, a linebacker who steps up to play the run or bites on the underneath slant opens a throwing lane for the dig behind him. User a rangy safety over the top of the dig route to close the window on the primary read and force the quarterback into a checkdown. Man coverage with no help over the bunch is the biggest liability against this play since the natural pick from the vertical clear-out will spring the corner or dig route open almost immediately.
Usage Tips
Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see two high safeties sitting deep this is a green light for the Dagger combo since the dig will settle into the soft spot between zones. Use motion or a quick glance at the corner over the bunch to confirm man versus zone, if the corner follows across the formation you likely have man coverage and can lean on the natural rub from the vertical clear-out. Hot route the X-Slant into a quick out if you see aggressive underneath robber coverage sitting on crossing routes. This play pairs well with Four Verticals and PA Choice Vert Comebacks from the same set since both threaten the deep middle and force safeties to stay honest before you come back to the intermediate dig. Save this call for second and medium to second and long situations where the defense is more likely to sit in a two-deep shell that this concept is built to exploit.
