Mtn Sprint Z Spot runs out of Shotgun Bunch Open TE with a jet motion sprint action that carries a receiver across the formation before the snap to distort zone landmarks. Post snap, the routes stack into a classic Spot concept on the right side: a corner route stretching the deep third, a quick pivot/spot route settling underneath, and a flat/drag route stretching the width of the field. This is a Cover 3 beater designed to attack the flat defender and hole player in three-deep zone shells, with the primary read progression starting on the flat route, working to the spot sitting in the honey hole, and finally the corner route if the deep defender bites underneath.
Pre-snap, watch the cornerback over the bunch alignment: if he follows the motion man across the formation it is man coverage, if he stays put it is likely zone. Key the flat defender post-snap since he determines whether the underneath flat route or the spot sitting behind him is open. Look for the deep third or deep quarter safety leaning toward the sprint motion, which opens a passing window on the corner route behind him. This concept struggles against Cover 2 with a hard flat squeeze or against man coverage with a physical press corner who can disrupt the spot route at the stem. Beware of a user-controlled linebacker sitting in the shallow zone (the lurk defender), as he can jump the spot route if the quarterback stares it down too long.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense rotates or bumps a defender, which reveals man versus zone coverage before the snap.
Attack Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells by working the flat to spot progression quickly since the corner route is the low-percentage high-reward option against a deep third defender who stays home.
Hot route the backside or check the running back into a flat release if you see a blitz look, since the sprint action naturally occupies underneath defenders and buys extra time.
Pair this play with Mtn Mesh Spot or RPO Alert Bubble earlier in a series so the defense respects the quick game, making the corner route explosive when the flat defender jumps underneath routes.
Best called on second or third and medium since the spot route sits right at the sticks and the corner route is a built in explosive shot if the safety cheats down.
