Y Trail out of Shotgun Bunch Open TE stacks three receivers to one side with an isolated X to the backside. The bunch releases into a deep out, a deep corner-post from the middle receiver, and the trail man (red route) working underneath from the point of the bunch across the field on a crossing pattern while the backside receiver runs a flat route to the sideline. This is a man beater designed to create natural rub traffic at the release point, with the trail route sitting behind the crossers to pick off man defenders in trail technique, and the primary read progression starts with the shallow trail crosser before working to the deep out and corner-post if the underneath window is late developing.
Defensive Reads
Watch for man coverage with tight press alignment on the bunch receivers, since the natural rub created by the stack will beat man to man technique almost every time. Identify single high safety looks presnap, this usually signals man coverage underneath and confirms the trail route should be open on the crossing action. Post-snap, track any user-controlled defender sitting in a lurk position over the middle, as they can undercut the trail route if they read the quarterback's eyes early. Zone coverage with two deep safeties and underneath zone drops can clog the trail and corner-post windows, so expect the deep out to be the more reliable target against zone shells. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they drop hard into short zones the trail concept loses its rhythm and the deep out or corner-post become the better answers.
Usage Tips
Look for man coverage indicators pre-snap like tight corner alignment on the bunch and a single high safety, since the natural rub at the release point creates immediate separation against man defenders.
Key the trail route first, it is the built-in answer against man coverage and should be your first progression before working to the deep out or corner-post.
Use this play on early downs or third and medium when you expect man coverage, then transition to RPO Alert Bubble or RPO Zone Alert Bubble on the next snap to punish defenses sitting on the trail concept.
If the defense shows two high safeties or soft zone shells, hot route the trail receiver into a shorter option or check to Z Spot from this same set for a quicker zone beater.
