Mtn Z Spot lines up out of Shotgun Ace Slot with 12 personnel and uses pre-snap motion into the backfield to check the defense before the snap. The route concept is a classic Spot combo on the play side: the outside receiver runs a corner route stretching the deep third, the flat receiver runs a quick out to the flat, and the slot receiver sits down on a hitch or spot route underneath, while the backside X runs a vertical seam up the numbers. This is a Cover 3 beater built around high low leverage on the flat defender, so the primary read progression starts with the underneath spot/hitch and the flat route to identify the curl-flat defender, then works to the corner route if the cornerback squats or the flat defender jumps the shallow route.
Watch the flat and curl defenders immediately after the snap, if they widen to take away the out route the spot sits open in the void behind them. Pre-snap, check safety depth and cornerback leverage on the play side corner route, a squatting corner or a safety cheating down signals Cover 3 and opens the corner route for a shot play. If the linebacker or nickel defender follows the pre-snap motion across the formation, that confirms man coverage and the offense should target the corner or seam route immediately. User controlled lurk defenders sitting in the shallow zone can jump the spot route, so quarterbacks need to look off that defender or work the flat route as a checkdown. This concept struggles against disciplined Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells where the corner has deep help, since the corner route gets bracketed and the underneath windows shrink against zone defenders sitting on the spot.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you are getting man coverage and can key the corner route immediately.
Against Cover 3 shells, read the flat defender first, if he widens with the flat route the spot sits in the window underneath for an easy completion.
Hot route the backside seam into a deeper post if you diagnose a two high shell rolling down to single high after the motion, this stresses the safety over the top.
Best used on second and medium or third and short to medium since the spot route settles quickly and gives the quarterback a safe checkdown against pressure.
Pair this play with Flood or Smash from the same Ace Slot set to keep the defense honest on flat defenders, then dial up Mtn Bench or PA Read once the defense starts jumping the spot route.
