HB Quick Base is a downhill dive run out of Shotgun Ace Slot 12 personnel, with both TEs attached inline and the slot receiver split wide, leaving a two receiver look up top with no immediate route concept shown. The diagram shows the HB taking a quick handoff and cutting into the B gap behind the interior line, relying on down blocks and double teams up front to seal the point of attack. This is a straightforward gap run play designed to hit fast before the defense can flow, so the primary read is the frontside gap first, with a bounce outside if the linebackers overcommit to the initial hole.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth before the snap, if they are stacked tight to the line this dive will struggle unless you set up misdirection first. Identify whether the defense is running a 4-3 or 3-4 front, odd fronts with a nose lined over center can clog the natural cutback lane. Post-snap, key the play side linebacker's first step, if he flows hard to the called gap, bounce outside immediately behind the TE block. This run gets stuffed by heavy blitz packages and gap-exchange fronts, so avoid calling it into known run blitz tendencies or against defenses showing overload fronts. Man coverage on the perimeter with safeties rotated into the box is the biggest red flag, that alignment signals extra run support and makes this a low value call.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs like first and ten to stay ahead of the chains and keep the defense honest against your pass sets from the same 12 personnel look.
Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more in the box, consider audibling to a play-action shot or RPO from this set instead.
Pair this with Read Option and Inside Zone out of the same Ace Slot formation so defenders cannot key on your run action based on personnel or splits.
Hot route the slot receiver on a quick out or hitch if you see man coverage crashing down, giving you a built in check option against overly aggressive fronts.
Mix in RPO Alert Bubble and RPO Zone Alert Bubble after establishing this dive a few times to punish linebackers who start cheating downhill.
