The two outside receivers stay stationary in the diagram, indicating this rep is purely a run concept with no route combo attached. The primary read progression for the ball carrier is backside to frontside: press the mesh point, read the play side double team at the point of attack, and cut off the first true zone blocking rules seam that opens between the guard and tackle.
Defensive Reads
Identify the Mike linebacker's depth pre-snap, if he is stacked tight to the line at 3-4 yards, expect an aggressive run fit that can be gashed with a cutback once the double team wins. Watch for safety rotation into the box pre-snap, a safety creeping down signals run support and should push you toward a cutback lane away from his angle. Post-snap, key the play side defensive tackle's shade, if he is blocked down decisively the bounce or cutback lane behind the double team will be there. This play struggles against interior nano blitzes and stacked fronts with both defensive tackles shaded to the play side gap, since it removes the natural cutback lane. Man coverage on the outside with the split TEs is irrelevant to this run concept, but zone shells with linebackers sitting flat can still crash down quickly if they read run keys fast, so timing your handoff and burst is critical.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a shift out of the two outside alignments to bait linebackers into showing their run fits before the snap.
Check the box count before calling this play, if the defense has six or more defenders in the box on early downs, consider audibling to a play-action shot instead.
This works best on early downs (1st and 2nd) when defenses are more likely to sit in base personnel and standard run fits.
Pair Inside Zone with RPO Alert Bubble and RPO Zone Alert Bubble from this same set so the defense has to respect both the interior run and the perimeter bubble read, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their gap fills.
Use hot routes to release one of the split TEs into a quick flare if you see a defense loading the box, giving you a built-in outlet without changing personnel.
