Mtn HB Cross Screen is a screen pass out of Shotgun Ace Slot with 12 personnel that uses pre-snap motion to bring the back across the formation before releasing him laterally to the opposite flat for the screen. Up front, the two vertical routes (deep out and go up the seam) and the crosser dragging underneath are designed to pull linebackers and defensive backs downfield or across the field, clearing the screen lane for the HB. The offensive line and near-side blockers set up in front to escort the back, making this a change-of-pace screen play built to bait aggressive man coverage and blitzes. Primary read progression: check the HB screen first as your built-in answer to pressure, then work to the crosser underneath, and finally look to the two vertical routes if the screen is covered and you have time.
Watch for linebackers flowing hard to the motion, if they overplay the HB across the formation the screen alley opens up wide for the user. Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with deep-dropping linebackers are vulnerable here because the underneath defenders vacate the screen lane to cover the two vertical routes. On defense, key the HB during motion and have a linebacker or nickel defender sit flat-footed to react to the screen instead of chasing the crosser or verticals. Man coverage with blitz packages is the biggest liability against this play, since blitzing defenders run themselves out of position to defend the screen behind them. User a linebacker to lurk in the shallow crossing lane and squat on the screen read, that single user rep can blow up both the crosser and the HB screen if timed correctly.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify man coverage, if a defender follows the HB across the formation you know the screen has a numbers advantage in space.
This play punishes aggressive blitz calls and nano blitzes since the screen releases blockers into the second level before the rush gets home, call it on early downs when you expect pressure.
Pair this with Mtn Z Spot or Mtn Bench from the same set so the defense sees the same HB motion and personnel look but has to respect both a quick underneath game and the screen, keeping them honest.
If the defense shows zone or drops a spy on the back, hot route one of the vertical routes into a quick option or peek the crosser instead of forcing the screen into traffic.
Ideal down and distance is second or third and short to medium, the screen picks up easy yards after catch and the crosser is a solid checkdown against zone coverage that sits back.
