Stick X-Slant out of Shotgun 4WR Trips Strong gives you a stick concept to the trips side paired with a lone X receiver running a slant to the backside. The trips side shows an out route from the inside slot, a vertical seam that breaks into a corner route from the middle slot, and a flat route from the outer receiver, forming the classic stick triangle read that stresses zone defenders horizontally and vertically. The backside X runs a quick slant while the running back stays in to help protect, making this a versatile man and zone beater with a fast progression: read the flat-to-corner-to-out stick combo first, then work backside to the slant if the defense rolls coverage away from trips.
Read the flat defender first since the stick concept lives and dies on whether the corner or linebacker sinks under the corner route or jumps the flat route. Watch for Cover 3 zone drops from linebackers, this play is designed to beat that shell by putting three defenders in conflict with the flat, out, and corner combination. If the defense shows Cover 2 with two deep safeties, expect the corner route to sit down in front of the safety, so be ready to check down to the out or flat quickly. Against man coverage looks, key the backside cornerback's leverage on the X receiver, if he plays inside leverage the slant becomes tightly contested and you should stick with the trips side stick concept instead. Watch for a user linebacker spying or lurking in the shallow middle since he can undercut both the out route and the slant if the offense is predictable with this call on early downs.
Presnap, identify whether the defense shows two-high or single-high safety look because the stick concept to the trips side punishes both Cover 3 and Cover 2 zone drops if you read the flat defender correctly.
Hot route the running back into a check release or quick route if you diagnose a blitz, since he is your only extra protector and the play can get exposed against five or six man pressure.
Against man coverage, prioritize the backside X-Slant since it wins quickly on a natural pick or rub if the defender plays outside leverage, giving you a fast, low risk throw.
Use this play on early downs or third and short to medium since the stick concept and slant both develop quickly and give you high percentage completions without needing a deep shot.
Pair this call with Stick Nod or Curls from the same set to keep linebackers honest on their flat and curl drops, then come back to Stick X-Slant once they start jumping the stick routes.
