This is a man beater built to attack the trips side with a natural pick from the slant and dig crossers freeing up the fade against outside leverage, but it also holds value versus zone since the drag and slant sit underneath while the fade stretches the deep third. Primary read progression starts with the fade against single high coverage, works down to the slant for a quick access throw versus man, and finishes with the backside drag as the checkdown versus a hard blitz.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify the free safety alignment since single high shells with the corner playing tight to the line are the biggest weakness against the fade route. Watch the slot corner depth on the trips side, since a corner playing off coverage will struggle to jump the slant given the traffic from the dig route crossing underneath. Post-snap, key the flat defender and any user controlled linebacker who might sit in the shallow drag lane, since a smart user lurk can jump the backside drag and turn it into a pick six. Look for cover 2 or cover 4 shells with two deep safeties, since that coverage takes away the fade window and forces the quarterback to live underneath with the slant and drag. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can be an issue since the play only has minimal protection help, so a fast pass rush can force a quick decision before the fade develops.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a defender count to confirm if the defense is showing single high or two high before the snap, since the fade read only hits versus single high shells with the corner playing inside leverage. If you see man coverage with no safety help over the trips side, hot route the outside receiver into a fade and live with the one on one matchup down the sideline. Against zone heavy defenses, work the slant and dig combo underneath since the natural pick from the inside routes creates easy separation for a quick rhythm throw. This play works best on early downs or third and short since the drag route gives you a safe checkdown if the deep options are covered.
