HB Draw out of Shotgun 4WR Trips Strong 10 personnel shows the running back taking a delayed handoff while the offensive line sells pass protection before releasing into a run block. The trips side and the backside X get vertical stems to hold linebackers and safeties in coverage drops, buying the interior line time to climb to the second level. This is a base run play designed to punish aggressive pass rushers and blitz-heavy defenses, and the primary read is patience: let the blocking develop, press the line of scrimmage, then find the crease created by the linebackers biting on the pass-read fake.
Watch for linebacker depth at the snap, if they immediately drop into zone coverage rather than stepping up, they are reading the draw. Key the defensive ends and edge rushers, wide upfield rushes create alleys but disciplined edge containment kills the play before it develops. Blitz packages with linebackers crashing downhill through the A or B gap shut this run down fast, spy or scrape techniques are the biggest threat. Man coverage shells with linebackers locked onto backs or tight ends tend to leave running lanes open since those defenders are occupied downfield. Look for a user-controlled linebacker sitting in the box, if he stays home and reads mesh point, the draw has almost no room to develop.
Call this on early downs or in obvious passing situations like 2nd and long or 3rd and medium when the defense is primed to rush the passer.
Check the defensive line splits and linebacker depth pre-snap, wide splits and blitz stacks at the second level are green lights for this draw.
Use this play in sequence with Stick X-Slant, Curls, or Double Slants from the same 4WR Trips Strong set so the defense respects dropback pass looks before you mix in the draw.
Avoid calling this against defenses showing heavy zone drops with linebackers sitting at depth, since they can read the mesh point and fill quickly.
Freeze the user linebacker by pausing your handoff timing slightly if you notice the CPU or user defender crashing hard off the snap.
