Ohio HB Angle out of Shotgun 4WR Trips Strong sends the backside X on a deep vertical up the sideline while the lone slot receiver on that side runs a deep out breaking away from the boundary. On the trips side, the inside slot runs a shallow drag across the field, the outside slot climbs vertically before breaking into a crossing route over the middle, and the outside WR runs a short in to occupy underneath zone defenders. The HB releases out of the backfield on the signature angle route, working away from the play call side and settling underneath for a quick answer against blitzes or a mismatch against linebackers in man coverage. This is a man beater built around the HB angle route as the primary read, with the crosser and drag serving as answers against zone coverage.
Defensive Reads
Watch the middle linebacker depth and width before the snap since he is the primary defender responsible for the HB angle route in man coverage. Identify single high safety alignments as a green light for the backside vertical route, since Cover 3 and Cover 1 shells leave that route on an island against a corner. Look for underneath zone defenders sinking too deep, which opens throwing lanes for the drag and crosser combo on the trips side. Against zone blitz or nano blitz packages, the HB angle route becomes the answer valve since it releases quickly and settles in the vacated area left by blitzing linebackers. If the defense shows two-high shell with underneath defenders staying tight on the crosser and drag, expect the quarterback to eventually look for the angle route as a checkdown or the vertical shot on the backside.

Key the HB angle route first, especially against Cover 1 or Cover 3 man match since linebackers rarely stay attached through the break.
Use this play on third and short to medium distance because the angle route and drag give you two quick underneath answers if the deep shots are covered.
Motion or check the coverage shell before the snap. If you see two deep safeties, prioritize the crosser and drag underneath, if you see a single high safety, look to the vertical routes on the backside for an explosive play.
Pair this with Slant Slot Fade or Double Slants earlier in a series to condition the defense to jump underneath routes, then hit the HB angle or backside vertical for a big gap in coverage.
Hot route the HB to a check and release if you anticipate a heavy blitz look, since the angle route depends on the HB getting a clean release before breaking outward.
