Stick Nod is a trips-based Stick concept out of Shotgun 4WR Trips Strong, built to attack zone coverage with a horizontal stretch. The trips side runs a stick combo: the outside receiver clears vertically, the middle slot sits on a nodded stick route sitting at the sticks, and the inside slot works underneath on a flat/drag route crossing the formation, while the backside X runs a deep go to hold the corner and safety. The lone back releases out of the backfield on a check release flat route, giving the quarterback a five man progression that reads high to low starting with the nod route in the seam-to-flat window against zone drops.
Identify if the defense shows a two high shell presnap, this often signals Cover 2 or Cover 4 which are vulnerable to the nod route sitting in the soft spot between underneath and deep zones. Watch the flow of the middle linebacker after the snap, if he widens to cover the flat route it opens a throwing lane for the nod route sitting at the sticks. Look for user controlled defenders dropping into the shallow crossing route lane, if they jump the route early it signals man coverage and the quarterback should look to the go route on the backside. Cover 3 defenses with a single high safety are especially susceptible to this play since the flat and nod routes create a natural conflict for the underneath zone defender. Beware of disguised blitzes from the trips side, if the slot defender crashes downhill presnap it may be a nano blitz look, check for the running back to release quickly into the flat as a hot read outlet.
Attack this out of obvious passing situations like second and long or third and medium where defenses sit in zone shells such as Cover 3 or Cover 4.
Read the middle linebacker and hook zone defenders presnap, if they are shaded toward the trips side, hot route the nod runner to a quick out to beat the sit-down zone defender.
Use the backside go route as a window shot if the safety cheats down to help on the stick concept, this opens up one on one shots against Cover 1 or Cover 0 looks.
Pair this play with Four Verticals and Seam X-Comeback in the same set to keep defenses honest on deep coverage rotation, then come back to Stick Nod to punish zone defenders sitting on shorter routes.
Against man coverage, prioritize the crossing route underneath since it creates natural rub traffic against the trips bunch alignment, giving quick separation versus man beaters like Cover 1.
