Because this is a fire zone blitz, the primary read progression starts with identifying the extra rusher and working from the sticks route or a hitch into the vacated zone before the underneath defenders can settle, then working back to any deep shot down the middle third if the quarterback holds the ball and the rush gets home late.
Defensive Reads
Watch the offensive line splits and running back alignment pre-snap since heavier protection often signals the offense expects pressure and will check to a hot route. Post-snap, key the quarterback's eyes to the flat since the curl/flat zone defenders are the first answer against man beaters like slants and quick outs. This fire zone eats up teams that try to attack it with five step drop back passing since the extra rusher disrupts timing before deep routes develop. Identify whether the offense is running a hot route or sight adjustment into the flat, since the curl/flat defenders in this fire zone are responsible for exactly that void.
Use this call on obvious passing downs like second and long or third and medium when you want to disguise a blitz look while still keeping three deep defenders over the top.
Mix this with Cover 3 Spy or Cover 1 Thief from the same set so quarterbacks cannot key on your pressure tendencies from the same personnel grouping.
Manually spy the middle hook defender if you suspect a quick draw or scramble since the fire zone drop can leave the intermediate middle exposed for a beat.
