Breakdown

Fz 2 Deep is a fire zone blitz out of the Quarter 1-3-7 set that drops two deep safeties over the top while rotating the underneath zones into a 3 under, 2 deep shell. The diagram shows both outside defenders sinking into deep halves, a zone dropper on each side working the intermediate flat to seam area, and pressure coming off the edge with two rushers plus a spy or hook defender crashing downhill on the strong side. This is a zone blitz designed to disguise pressure while still protecting the deep middle, so the primary read is the underneath flat defender to seam curl combo first, then the deep half safety over the top if the offense tries to attack the vacated intermediate window.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check the safety alignment for a two high shell and note if either corner is showing soft outside leverage, which confirms the deep half rotation before the ball is snapped. Post-snap, key the underneath zone defender responsible for the seam to flat combo since that defender is the first trigger point against curl and out route combos. Watch for the extra rusher timing off the edge, because if the blitz gets home quickly it erases any need to fully rely on the coverage shell behind it. This call is vulnerable to any concept that attacks the deep middle seam immediately after the safeties rotate, so user the deep half defender if you sense a vertical shot coming down the pipe. It struggles against quick RPO game and fast bubble screens since the fire zone rush commits defenders forward before they can react to horizontal stretch concepts.

Usage Tips

Disguise this call by showing a two high shell pre-snap and only rotating the safeties down after the snap to bait quarterbacks into throwing into the blitz. Use this on early downs or third and medium when opponents like to attack the middle of the field with in cuts or dig routes, since the underneath zone rotation is built to jump those throws. Pair Fz 2 Deep with Cover 3 Mable and 3 Double Mable in the same set so your pre-snap look stays consistent while you alternate between three deep and two deep shells. Hot route the flat defender into a shallow hook drop if you are facing quick game concepts like slants and hitches, since the base zone drop can be a step slow versus rhythm throws. Save this play for money downs where the extra rusher and zone disguise can force a hurried throw, but avoid calling it into heavy run personnel since the fire zone rush lanes can be sealed by a lead blocker.
