Defensive Reads

Watch for the quarterback's first read against your man coverage corners, since Cover 1 man beaters like slants and quick outs against off coverage can exploit the tight leverage. This blitz gets shut down hard by RPOs and quick screens since the ball comes out before your rushers arrive, so respect any bubble screen or stick concept tendencies from your opponent. Man Up 3 Deep or Cover 4 Drop are better answers if your opponent starts attacking the vacated underneath zones with option routes against this specific blitz.

Usage Tips

Call this on third and medium to third and long when you expect a quick game or shotgun spread look from the offense, since the DB blitz timing is designed to beat rhythm throws before receivers separate. Check the offensive formation pre-snap and only fire this against single high shells or spread sets without extra blockers, because if the offense loads the box or uses max protect the extra blitzers will get picked up and your man corners are left on an island too long. User the deep middle safety and manually stay square until you see the quarterback's eyes, since that safety is your only true zone protection against a big shot play. Mix DB Strike 1 with Cover 1 Thief and Man Up 3 Deep in the same play-calling sequence so the offense cannot key on your pressure tells from pre-snap alignment. Hot route your underneath man defender into a shallow spy on obvious passing downs if you are worried about mobile quarterbacks scrambling through the vacated blitz lanes.
