3 Double Buzz is a zone coverage call out of the Big Quarter 1-3-7 set that drops both flanking defenders into buzz spots underneath while the deep shell stays intact. At the snap the two outside defenders sink into shallow buzz zones just behind the line of scrimmage, the two inside underneath defenders wall off the seams, and the three deep defenders bail into deep thirds to cap anything over the top. This is a zone beater designed to bracket quick game and intermediate crossers, and the primary read progression for the defense is to identify any receiver working the flat or seam first, then work inside out to the deep middle third if the quarterback resets and looks downfield.
Defensive Reads
Watch the two receivers aligned outside the buzz zones first, since any quick out or flat route into that area is the primary throw the offense wants. If both inside receivers run seam routes, key the underneath defenders sitting in the tan zones to make sure they climb and wall the seam before the ball arrives. This coverage struggles against deep double moves and skinny posts that split the deep thirds, so watch your deep defenders' spacing before the snap. Look for the offense to run four verticals or an overload seam concept to attack the buzz zones vertically, since the underneath defenders are shallow and can be beaten over the top. Post-snap, track any user controlled defender jumping the buzz route too aggressively, since that opens the deep out or corner route behind it.
Usage Tips
Use this call on early downs when you expect quick game or stick concepts since the buzz defenders sit right in the flat and seam windows.
Pre-snap, check for bunch or trips formations that try to flood one side, then user the flat defender on the trips side to jump the shallow route.
This shell is vulnerable to deep out and comeback routes thrown with timing, so be ready to sink your deep thirds defender with the outside receiver stem.
Pair 3 Double Buzz with Cover 3 Spy or Cover 1 Thief in the same set so offenses cannot key blitz or coverage shell off your pre-snap alignment.
On third and medium, call this after showing Man Up 3 Deep on the previous snap to disguise the zone drop and bait the quarterback into a throw window that is not actually there.
