Cover 2 Spy is a zone coverage call out of the Big Quarter 1-3-7 personnel that drops two deep safeties over the top while a middle linebacker spies the quarterback straight up the field. The two outside corners sink into shallow curl/flat zones, the two underneath defenders on the interior wall off the short middle, and the two deep safeties split the field into halves to take away anything over the top. This is a zone beater shell designed to shut down mobile quarterbacks on designed rollouts or scrambles while still holding down two deep verticals, with the primary read progression starting at the spy defender's ability to mirror the quarterback before working out to the flat zones and finally the deep half safeties if the quarterback tries to push the ball downfield.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the offense is in shotgun with a mobile quarterback, since that is the trigger to stay in this spy look rather than audible out. Post-snap, key the spy defender's mirror technique on the quarterback drop, if he bites on play-action or misreads the pocket, the scramble lane opens up. Watch the two deep safeties for their pedal and break point on go routes and corner routes, since Cover 2 is naturally vulnerable to the deep middle seam between the two safeties. This shell gets exploited by route combos that flood one flat zone with two receivers, since the underneath zone defenders can be outnumbered on quick out and flat combinations. Look for offenses to attack the sideline zones with double moves, since the corners are playing soft zone technique and can be susceptible to sluggo or out-and-up routes if they jump the initial break too aggressively.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs against mobile quarterbacks who like to escape the pocket and run, since the spy takes away the scramble lane immediately.
Use it in short yardage or when you suspect a designed QB run or option play, since the spy defender can crash down as an extra run defender if the QB tucks it.
Pair this with Cover 3 Spy in the same set to disguise your spy look while alternating deep coverage shells, keeping the offense guessing on whether it is two deep safeties or three underneath zones.
Bait the quarterback into throwing the deep out or corner route by showing soft corners pre-snap, then let the safety over the top close on any ball thrown into the deep half.
Avoid calling this on obvious passing downs against a pure pocket passer, since the spy is wasted coverage and you are essentially playing with one less true pass defender in the shell.
