Breakdown
PA HB Wheel out of Power I Strong shows a play-action fake to sell the run first, with the HB releasing out of the backfield into a wheel route up the sideline off the play fake (red arrow bending upfield). The slot man runs a deep out/corner breaking route toward the boundary (yellow route flattening out at intermediate depth), while the outside receiver runs a shallow drag or flat route underneath (blue arrow). This is a play-action man beater built to isolate the HB on a linebacker or slot corner in the wheel route, with the primary read progression starting on the HB wheel against man coverage, then working to the intermediate breaking route if the wheel is covered, and checking down to the flat route as the last resort.
Defensive Reads
Man coverage on the HB out of the backfield is the biggest tell this play will hit, especially if a linebacker or slot defender lines up in trail position pre-snap. Watch for safeties rotating down into the box pre-snap, since that signals single high coverage and opens up more room for the wheel route to climb vertically without deep help. If the linebackers show blitz indicators or crowd the line of scrimmage, the wheel route becomes even more dangerous since there is no shallow zone defender left to wall it off. Zone coverage shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 with disciplined linebacker drops are the best counter, since a zone defender can sit underneath the wheel and force a check down. User controlled defenders spying the HB out of the backfield or a linebacker with eyes on the flat can jump the wheel route early, so watch for that user flash before committing to the throw.
Usage Tips
Sell the play fake by holding the play-action animation as long as possible before working through your reads, since defenders biting on the run action open up the wheel route immediately.
Use this play on early downs like 1st or 2nd and medium when defenses are more likely to respect the Power I run look and bite on the fake.
Check pre-snap for man coverage indicators such as inside leverage on the slot defender or a linebacker shaded toward the HB, since the wheel route is a direct exploit of man matchups.
Hot route the underneath flat receiver into a deeper crossing route if you are facing zone heavy defenses, since the flat route is the weakest option against zone drops.
Pair this play with HB Toss or FB Dive from the same Power I Strong set earlier in a drive to condition the defense into keying the run, then hit them with PA HB Wheel once linebackers start flowing hard downhill.
