HB Slam is a downhill dive run out of Power I Strong with 31 personnel, showing a fullback and tight end aligned tight to the formation for extra blocking surface. The diagram shows the halfback taking a direct hand off and hitting the A or B gap immediately behind the fullback lead block, with the offensive line blocking straight ahead to seal running lanes. This is a run play designed to move the pile in short yardage, not a man or zone beater, and the primary read progression is playside gap first, then bounce to the backside cutback lane if the fullback lead block gets picked off at the point of attack.
Pre-snap, check the box count and safety depth, if the defense has one high safety and stacked linebackers at depth, they are selling run support and this play will face tight windows. Look for the fullback and tight end alignment in the diagram, if the defense shows a heavy front with extra defensive linemen or a linebacker cheating into the A gap, HB Slam gets clogged fast. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's first step, if he flows hard downhill without hesitation the fullback lead block loses the leverage battle and the runner must cut backside immediately. Watch for user-controlled defenders sitting in the hole pre-snap, a defender manually stepping into the intended gap before the snap signals the play is sniffed out and you should consider an audible. This play struggles against goal line or heavy run stopping fronts with extra linebackers, but it beats light boxes and defenses that widen out for outside run fits.
Call HB Slam on short yardage and goal line situations where you need one or two yards on the ground against a stacked box. Check the defensive front pre-snap for a bubble in the interior gaps, if the defense is in a 4-3 or odd front with linebackers crashing downhill, this play can still convert because of the extra fullback blocker. Pair HB Slam with PA FB Flat or PA Boot Slide off the same personnel and formation look to punish linebackers who key the fullback and bite on run fits. Use HB Slam early in a series to set up X Slant or Power O later, since the tight formation and lead blocker action forces the defense to respect the interior run before you attack outside or through the air. Avoid calling this on third and long since it lacks explosive play potential against light boxes.
