Defensive Reads
Watch the play side defensive end or outside linebacker at the snap, since a hard crash inside opens the alley for the HB to bounce all the way outside behind the pullers. Key the strong safety and any run support defender rotating down into the box pre-snap, because an extra defender in the alley or a user-controlled safety flying downhill can blow up the edge before the blockers arrive. Watch for linebackers reading the pulling guards and flowing fast to the sideline, since disciplined linebacker flow with outside contain defenders squeezing the edge is what shuts this run down completely. Look for cornerbacks pinching in run support on the play side, as an aggressive corner crash forces the HB to cut back inside against the grain. Identify blitz packages sending extra defenders off the edge pre-snap, since a contain blitz or edge pressure package can beat the toss to the perimeter before the lead blockers set the wall.
Usage Tips
Call HB Toss on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when you want to establish tempo and force the defense to respect outside speed before you go back inside with FB Dive or HB Blast.
Check the defensive front pre-snap for edge defenders lined up wide or safeties cheating toward the boundary, since a hard edge crash or a run-fit safety in the box can blow this play up before the pullers get outside.
If the defense shows a heavy inside blitz look or stacked box, motion the fullback or use a pre-snap shift to identify whether the play side edge is truly unblocked, and consider audibling to HB Misdirection or Power O to attack the opposite gap.
Pair HB Toss with PA Boot Slide or PA HB Wheel out of the same Power I Strong look so the play-action rollout mirrors the toss action and forces linebackers to hesitate on flow.
Against aggressive user linebackers who key the toss and fill hard, mix in HB Slam or HB Lead Dive from the same personnel to keep them honest and slow their pursuit reads.
