Breakdown

Power O (1) out of the Power I Strong formation is a downhill gap scheme run play built for physical, clock controlled football. The fullback leads through the hole with a kick out or lead block on the point of attack defender while the offensive line pulls the backside guard to seal the edge, creating a power gap for the HB to press. This is a run play with no pass option, and the primary read progression is a one cut decision for the ball carrier: press the designed A or B gap hole, then read the fullback's block to bounce outside or stick it up inside based on how the second level linebacker flows.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify the box count and safety depth. A single high safety with linebackers stacked tight signals run support that can clog the power gap, while two deep safeties often means lighter boxes you can exploit. Watch the play side defensive end and outside linebacker. If they crash hard down the line pre-snap or on the snap, the ball carrier should look to bounce this outside off the fullback's kick out block. Key the middle linebacker's flow. Power O struggles against a fast flowing MLB who beats the pulling guard to the hole, so scheme it with misdirection like HB Misdirection to freeze him. This run play gets shut down by inside run blitzes and stacked fronts that get penetration before the guard can pull and seal, so avoid calling it into obvious run blitz personnel like heavy nickel or dime fronts loaded in the box. Post-snap, watch for a user controlled linebacker sitting in the hole (lurk style run fit). If he reads pull and attacks the gap early, cut back away from the pull direction for a bigger gain.

Usage Tips

Use Power O (1) on early downs like first and ten or second and short to stay ahead of the sticks and keep defenses honest against your play-action shots.

Check the defensive box count pre-snap. If the defense has six or more in the box against 31 personnel, consider audibling to PA Power O or PA Boot Slide to make them pay for over committing.

User the fullback through the hole so you control the lead block against a blitzing linebacker or crashing defensive end, this is critical against nano blitz packages that stack the point of attack.

Pair this play with HB Toss and HB Misdirection in the same series to keep the defense guessing on gap direction, then hit them with PA HB Wheel once the linebackers start cheating downhill on run fits.

Against aggressive man coverage or run blitz looks, hot route the fullback to adjust his kick out angle if you see a defensive end crashing hard inside pre-snap.
