Drive out of Pistol Wing Tight Z is a classic man beater built on the two-man drive concept on the backside. The Y receiver runs a deep dig that settles behind the linebackers while the X underneath crosses on a shallow drag, creating a natural rub and pick against man defenders and a horizontal stretch against zone linebackers. On the frontside, the slot runs a corner route pushing vertically outside while the TE releases into the flat off a quick out, giving the quarterback a high low read on that side if the drive concept is covered. Blocking is standard five man protection up front, so the primary progression starts with the deep dig, works down to the drag, then flows to the corner and flat combo if the defense sits on the middle of the field.
Defensive Reads
Pre snap, identify single high safety looks since Cover 1 and Cover 3 leave the underneath crossers exposed to the natural pick created by the dig and drag stacking routes. Watch the flat defender on the frontside TE release, if he sits and reads the quarterback's eyes instead of jumping the route, the underneath crossing combo becomes the answer instead. Post snap, key the middle linebacker's drop depth, if he sinks deep to wall off the dig, the shallow drag underneath him becomes open immediately for a quick throw. Against Cover 4 or quarters shells, the deep dig loses separation because the safety can sit on it, so look for the corner route on the frontside to attack the seam before the safety rotates over. User controlled defenders lurking in the shallow drag lane, common in nano blitz packages, can bait the quarterback into an interception, so read whether a defender is sitting on the crossing route path before committing to that throw.
Usage Tips
Pre snap, check for man coverage indicators like tight press corners or a single high safety rotating late, since the crossing drag and dig combo thrives against man match defenders who have to fight through traffic.
Use the flat route on the frontside as your dump off against blitz looks, especially in third and medium situations where the underneath drag is jumped by a spy or a robber defender.
Hot route the backside dig into a deeper post if you see two high safeties bail into a Cover 4 shell, since the naturally occurring pick can still spring the drag but the dig loses value against soft zone.
