Breakdown

Read Option out of the Pistol U Off 12 personnel set puts the QB in the pistol with the HB aligned behind him, giving the offense a true zone read look with two TEs attached for extra blocking surface. The diagram shows the QB reading the play side edge defender while the HB takes the handoff track, with the offensive line executing an inside zone blocking scheme to displace the front. This is a run play built to attack gap integrity and force the defense into a numbers disadvantage, with the primary read being the backside end: give if he crashes down on the HB, pull and keep if he sits or squeezes the mesh point.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify the defensive end or OLB assigned to the read side, if he is crashing hard on run downs he is vulnerable to the keep. Watch for a spy or contain defender staying home on the edge, that alignment is designed to eliminate the QB keep option and force the give every time. Stacked boxes with linebackers creeping to the line pre-snap signal a run blitz, which can blow up the mesh point before the read develops. Post-snap, track the backside pursuit of the DE, if he sits flat footed and reads the mesh he is playing it correctly and the offense should have called a pass instead. Man coverage on the perimeter with no extra flow support in the box is the green light, since the QB can key one defender for the entire read with numbers in his favor.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more in the box the zone read loses its numbers advantage so consider audible into a pass concept instead.

Use the pistol alignment to disguise run versus pass intent, since PA Boot Y Drag and PA Deep Cross share the same backfield look and keep defenses honest.

Against aggressive user defenders flying downhill on the HB, pull the ball and attack the edge yourself, this play punishes overpursuit better than any called run.

Pair this with HB Dive and HB Zone Wk in the same series to condition the defense to crash inside, then hit them with the keep read for an explosive gain.

Best called on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) when you want to stay ahead of the chains and keep the defense guessing between run and RPO/play-action shots.
