HB Dive out of Pistol U Off with 12 personnel is a straight downhill run play designed to hit the interior of the line as fast as possible. The diagram shows the HB taking a direct handoff and cutting north-south immediately behind the center, with the offensive line blocking straight ahead to create a vertical crease rather than pulling or reaching to a side. There are no route concepts shown here since both TEs and WRs are not part of the diagrammed action, confirming this is a pure gap run play rather than a play-action or RPO look. The primary read progression for the ball carrier is to press the initial dive lane, then bounce off the center or guard's block if the A-gap is clogged.
Watch linebacker depth before the snap. If both linebackers are sitting shallow and stacked tight to the line, they can beat you to the dive lane and blow up the play for a loss. Identify base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts with no A-gap blitz shown. These fronts are the easiest to gash since the interior blockers get clean angles on defensive tackles. Look for defensive tackles shaded hard into the A-gaps pre-snap. This alignment signals the defense is sitting on the dive and will require a cutback read to the B-gap instead. Post-snap, key the Mike linebacker's first step. If he fills downhill immediately without hesitation, the dive is likely to get stuffed and you should bounce outside on future calls. Heavy blitz packages that send extra defenders through the interior gaps will beat this play consistently, since there is no extra protection or lead blocker to account for a numbers disadvantage up front.
Use HB Dive in short yardage and goal line situations where a quick vertical push through the A-gap is more valuable than east-west patience.
Check the box count before the snap. If the defense has stacked six or more defenders inside the tackles, consider audibling to HB Zone Wk or HB Stretch to get to the edge instead.
Pair HB Dive with Read Option and PA Boot Y Drag from this same set to keep linebackers honest. Once the defense starts crashing hard on dive fakes, the play-action boot and read option keeper punish overaggressive flow.
Snap the ball quickly on obvious run downs to prevent the defense from diagnosing personnel and sending extra run defenders on a delayed blitz.
Use manual control on the fullback or lead blocker if available to seal off a linebacker crashing the dive lane, since the CPU blocking AI can whiff on second level defenders.
