Defensive Reads
Look for linebackers cheating up pre-snap in run support alignment, this tells you they are vulnerable to the play fake and the drag route will have a clean window. Watch the boot side cornerback and safety depth, if they sit deep in a two high shell the vertical route on that side becomes the better read over the drag. Man coverage with linebackers matched up on the Y tight end is the ideal beat since the drag creates natural separation as it crosses the field away from the defender's help. Zone defenses with a robber or lurk defender sitting in the shallow middle can jump the drag route, so key the middle linebacker's depth after the snap before committing to that throw. Fast, disciplined pass rush that contains the boot side edge rusher shuts this down quickly, so watch for a defensive end staying home instead of crashing on the run fake.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs or after establishing an inside run look with HB Slam or HB Zone Wk so linebackers respect the run fake and bite up on the play action. Check the flow of the linebackers pre-snap, if they are stacked tight to the line in run support this drag will hit wide open behind them. Roll the QB fully to the boot side before releasing the ball to keep the pocket clean and buy time for the drag to develop across the field. Pair this call with PA Deep Cross or PA Shot Go's in the same set to keep defenses guessing between the shallow drag concept and deeper shot plays off similar run action. Hot route the backside checkdown into a flat route if you expect a hard blitz, giving the QB a quick outlet before the drag fully clears the box.
