PA Shot Go's is a play-action shot play out of Pistol 12 personnel designed to attack deep coverage with vertical stress. The play fakes the handoff to hold linebackers and safeties, then sends both outside receivers on Go routes up the sideline while the inline receiver runs a deep dig back across the middle, creating a three-level vertical clear-out. Pass protection is a slide scheme with the backfield player releasing late as a checkdown safety valve, making this a man beater designed to win on double moves or one-on-one matchups against outmatched corners, with the primary read progressing from the field-side Go to the backside Go and finally down to the crossing route underneath.
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two-high or single-high safeties since two-high shells cap both Go routes and force you to the deep dig read. Watch cornerback press alignment: soft press or off coverage on the outside receivers signals a Go route window, while hard press man invites a jam that can disrupt the vertical timing. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's drop, if he sinks with the deep dig instead of respecting the play fake, the crossing route will be taken away and you need to climb the progression back outside. This play struggles against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with disciplined deep safeties who stay home, and it gets shut down by a well-timed user blitz off the edge that beats the play-action protection before routes develop. Look for user-controlled defenders lurking in the shallow middle who can jump the deep dig route, if you see a defender sitting in that window, stick with the outside vertical routes instead.
Call this on early downs or second-and-long situations when you have play-action tendency built up from your run game so the linebackers bite on the fake.
Check safety depth before the snap: if both safeties are sitting deep in a two-high shell, look immediately to the deep dig crossing route since the Go routes will be capped.
If you see single-high or a corner blitz look, throw the field-side Go with anticipation before the safety can rotate over the top.
Hot route the backfield checkdown into a flat route if the defense shows heavy blitz pressure so you have a quick outlet against man beaters like nano blitzes.
Pair this play with HB Zone Wk or HB Dive earlier in a series to sell the run fake, then dial up PA Shot Go's once the defense starts crashing downhill on run tendencies.
