Zone Split is an inside zone run play out of Pistol that stretches the front side gaps while the backside guard and tackle work combo blocks to the second level. The HB reads the playside double team and looks to bend the ball back if the backside cutback lane opens up against overpursuing linebackers. This is a base run play with zone blocking rules, not a play-action or RPO, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is playside double team, then backside cutback, then bounce outside if the edge defender crashes down.
Watch linebacker depth pre-snap, if they are sitting shallow at five yards or closer they can fill the cutback lane quickly Identify a shaded nose or three technique pre-snap since a heavy interior alignment kills the playside double team push Man coverage with a single high safety often leaves the box light, giving the zone run more room to develop Post-snap, key the play side defensive end, if he crashes hard inside the HB should bounce it outside immediately User controlled linebackers sitting in the A or B gap as a lurk threat can blow up this run before it develops, so scout for aggressive user play pre-snap
Run this on early downs like first and ten or second and short when defenses expect balance out of Spread Y Slot personnel
Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or fewer in the box this play has favorable blocking angles
Use the left or right stick to aim the HB path manually so you can press the playside double team then cut off the puller if a linebacker flows too fast
Pair this with Mtn PA Split Flood or Y Cross on early downs to keep linebackers honest and prevent them from selling out against the run
Avoid calling this into stacked eight man fronts or heavy blitz looks since the interior gaps get clogged before the double team can climb
