It is a classic man beater against single high looks and a zone beater against two deep shells that get overloaded when both safeties have to pick a seam to help on. Pass protection is a standard five man slide out of 11 personnel, so the primary read progression starts with the two inside seam runners (the slot and Y off the pistol look) working middle of the field, then bends outside to the boundary vertical if the safety commits inside.
Read the free safety at the snap, if he stays in the deep middle it signals single high man or Cover 3, which means the seams will be tight but the sideline verticals should win against outside leverage corners. If both safeties bail to depth pre-snap and stay split, that is Cover 2 or Cover 4, so target the seam windows outside the hash marks where the corner has to choose between the vertical and any underneath route. Watch the linebacker depth and spacing, if they sink hard into deep zone drops instead of carrying the seam runners it usually means a Tampa 2 look, which is vulnerable right down the pipe before the safety can rotate over. Identify user controlled defenders jumping into a lurk position in the middle of the field, since a smart user will sit in the honey hole to bait the inside seam throw, so be ready to reset to the outside verticals if you see a defender sitting still instead of matching the route. Beware disguised blitzes off the edge, since Four Verticals takes time to develop and a well timed nano blitz or overload pressure package can force a bad decision before the seams clear, so account for extra rushers with your protection slide or check to a quicker route in the progression.
Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties sitting at depth expect a Cover 2 or Cover 4 shell and target the seams between the corner and safety rather than throwing into the middle of the field. Against Cover 3 or single high man, hot route one outside vertical into a slant or drag to punish the flat defender and give yourself a quick answer if the seams are capped. Use the pistol alignment to your advantage by faking a play action shot off HB Stretch first in your call sequence, since defenses that bite on the run fake open up easy explosive plays over the top. Save Four Verticals for second and long or third and long situations where the defense is more likely to sit in a soft shell, and pair it with Y Cross or PA Corner Spot on earlier downs to bait linebackers into shallow drops before hitting the deep shots. If you are facing heavy blitz packages, motion a receiver pre-snap to identify man coverage, and if you see a defender follow across the formation, throw the seam quickly before extra pass rushers close the pocket.
