Mtn PA Split Flood is a play-action flood concept built off the Pistol run fake to hold linebackers and freeze the second level before attacking one side of the field with three levels of stress. The flood combo stacks a deep route, an intermediate out or corner breaking route, and a shallow flood route to the same side, forcing a single defender or safety to defend all three depths in a hurry-up-the-throw window. This is primarily a zone beater against Cover 3 and Cover 2 shells since it overloads one flat and one deep quarter, and the primary read progression starts deep to short: check the deep corner or go route first, then work down to the intermediate breaker, and finish with the flood route in the flat as the checkdown against a hard close from the corner.
Pre snap identify whether the cornerback to the flood side is playing off man or zone leverage, tight man coverage with no help over the top signals a blitz or man beater counter is needed instead Watch the strong safety depth and rotation, if he sits flat footed at the snap he is likely keying run action which opens the deep corner route behind him Post snap track the flat defender first, if a linebacker or nickel corner sinks under the intermediate route and widens to the flat, the underneath flood route will be covered and you should climb the ladder to the corner throw This concept struggles against Cover 4 or Cover 6 shells with two deep safeties splitting the field since the deep route gets bracketed and the intermediate window shrinks Beware of nano blitzes disguised as zone pressure, if the defense sends an extra rusher off the edge while dropping eight into a zone shell the play action hold will not buy enough time, so know your protection before snapping
Look for single high safety shells pre snap since Cover 3 and Cover 1 defenders have to declare a flat responsibility that this flood concept exploits immediately
Use the play action fake to bait linebackers up on early down and medium distance situations like second and 5 to second and 8 where run action is credible
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick slant or drag if the defense shows two high safeties rotating away from the flood side, this gives you an outlet if the strong safety jumps the flood route
