LB Blitz 1 is a Cover 1 man blitz out of the Nickel 3-3 Cub front that sends an extra linebacker off the edge while the rest of the front four rushes downhill, leaving the deep middle safety alone over the top. The five underneath defenders are locked into man coverage on the outside receivers and slot, while the free safety spins to the deep middle third as the last line of defense. This is a pressure package, not a coverage beater, designed to disrupt the quarterback's timing before he can go through his progression. The primary read for the blitz is off the snap: the extra rusher keys the offensive tackle to see if he gets a two-way go, then attacks the most direct path to the quarterback.
Defensive Reads
Watch the offensive line splits pre-snap, tight splits usually signal they expect pressure and will slide protection toward your blitzer. Check the running back's alignment, an offset back to the blitz side often means he will chip or pick up the rusher, so time your blitz to beat the chip. Post-snap, key the quarterback's eyes for a quick hitch or slant since man coverage underneath can get beat by option routes if your rush does not get home fast enough. This look is vulnerable to screens and RPOs that attack the vacated space where the blitzing linebacker lined up, so user a nearby defender to squat on quick throws to that area. Against spread formations, confirm the deep safety has rotated to the middle before the snap, if he is late rotating you risk a big play over the top on a vertical shot.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or short yardage situations where the offense is likely to run quick game or shotgun spread concepts that need extra protection time to develop.
Identify the running back's protection assignment pre-snap since a chip or check release can slow down your extra rusher and change your win path.
Use the flat and shallow zone defenders as spies against mobile quarterbacks who like to escape the pocket on scrambles.
Pair this with Cover 1 Robber or Cover 1 Contain from the same set so quarterbacks cannot key blitz personnel or leverage based on safety depth alone.
Mix in Mike Blitz 0 or SS Blitz 0 as change ups to keep offenses guessing about which gap the extra rusher is attacking on any given snap.
