Mid Blitz out of the 2-4 Swap Dbl Mug set is an interior pressure package designed to collapse the pocket up the middle before the quarterback can climb the ladder. Both mugged linebackers shoot inside gaps off the snap while the secondary rotates into a match zone shell behind them, making this a hybrid blitz that disguises man and zone principles simultaneously. The primary read for the defense is the running back or check release option out of the backfield, since interior gaps get occupied fast and any leaking receiver into the vacated middle of the field becomes the immediate throwing lane the offense will attack.
Watch the offensive line splits pre-snap, tight splits with a fullback or extra tight end usually mean they are anticipating interior pressure and will slide protection to the mug, so consider checking to a different call. Key the running back alignment, if he is offset to the blitz side he is likely staying in to chip or pick up the looper, if he is offset away expect him to leak into the vacated middle as a checkdown. Post-snap, identify whether the quarterback is climbing the pocket or stepping up into the throw, climbing means your spy or the second level rusher needs to close the window immediately. This play beats quick game man concepts and shallow drag combinations because the interior rush disrupts the timing before receivers can settle into throwing lanes. This play gets exposed by hot route sight adjustments and slot fade or seam concepts against man coverage, since the corners are often left in isolated matchups with no help over the top while the front focuses inside.
Show the mugged look pre-snap to bait the quarterback into thinking six is coming, then user spy the running back if he stays home to protect since he is the first outlet against interior pressure.
Save Mid Blitz for third and medium to third and long situations where offenses are more likely to hold blockers in and take an extra second in the pocket, giving your interior rush time to disrupt the launch point.
Mix this call in behind SS Sim 2 or Nickel Sim 2 so the offense sees mugged linebackers on consecutive snaps but cannot tell which one actually brings pressure and which one drops into coverage.
User the strong side linebacker on the snap and manually time his blitz to hit the same gap the center is sliding away from, this creates a natural pick if the offense runs any middle screen or draw as a blitz beater.
Avoid calling this against empty formations or shotgun spread sets with quick game concepts since the hot routes get out before your interior pressure ever arrives.
