Breakdown

Hot Blitz 3 out of the 2-4 Swap Dbl Mug set is a five man pressure package built off Cover 3 principles, sending both mugged linebackers off the edges while dropping into a three deep, three under shell behind the rush. The Mug alignment disguises which gaps are being attacked, so the offensive line has to identify the field side blitzer first since that is typically the free runner if picked up incorrectly. As a defender, your primary read progression is: confirm both mug backers are indeed coming, get eyes to the running back for a check release blitzer, then sink into your underneath zone landmark once the rush is accounted for.

Defensive Reads

Watch the running back at the snap, if he stays in to chip or block, your five man rush becomes six and the pocket should collapse fast, if he releases into the flat you need the underneath zone defender to sink and wall off that route immediately. Identify whether the quarterback is in shotgun spread with four verticals or trips, since Hot Blitz 3 is vulnerable to quick slants and hitches thrown before the edge rush arrives. Key the tight end or slot receiver releasing across the middle, that is the primary void this blitz creates in the intermediate zone if your linebacker drop is slow off the mug alignment. This call is best against man beater route combos that need extra time to develop, like deep crossers or double moves, because the pressure disrupts timing before those routes break open. Against hurry up no huddle offenses running quick RPO game, this blitz is exposed because the free rusher tips the run fit and the offense can simply hand off away from pressure or throw the bubble screen behind it.

Usage Tips

Show the Mug look at the line but delay the snap timing so the quarterback cannot get a clean full flip of the coverage before the ball is snapped.

Use this on third and medium to third and long when offenses are more likely to be in five or seven man protection, since the extra rushers create clean lanes if the running back stays in to block.

Motion a linebacker or DB late to bait the quarterback into thinking one side is soft, then bring the pressure from the opposite mugged spot for a true nano blitz effect.

Pair this call with SS Sim 2 or Blitz Loop Sim 3 from the same set so the pre-snap picture looks identical but the underneath zone drops and rush lanes change, keeping the quarterback guessing.

Hot route the flat defender to shallow cross depth if you expect quick game concepts, since Hot Blitz 3 sacrifices some underneath flat coverage to get the extra rusher home.
