Breakdown

CB Bench Sim 2 is a simulated pressure package out of the Nickel 2-4 Swap Dbl Mug front, designed to disguise a four man rush behind a two deep, five under zone shell. The corner shown mugged at the line bails into a bench (flat/curl) zone at the snap instead of blitzing, while the front generates pressure with a stunt or twist through the interior, creating confusion for the offensive line's protection identification. This is a zone based blitz package, not a true blitz or coverage beater in the traditional sense, and the primary read for the defense is watching the quarterback's eyes to jump any hitch, curl, or flat route thrown into the bench defender's zone before working back to deep quarter or half defenders on double moves and verticals.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the offense has a hot route or sight adjustment built in against the Mug look, since this play is designed to punish quarterbacks who assume pressure is coming. Watch the running back and slot receiver releases immediately after the snap, since the bench defender is sitting on quick flat and curl throws that attack the vacated blitz alignment. Post-snap, read the quarterback's shoulders and eyes to trigger on any underneath route thrown into the sim zone before the ball arrives, but stay disciplined against play-action rollouts since the disguise can be exploited if the QB looks off the sim and throws deep. This beats quick game and RPO concepts that expect blitz but struggles against teams that check into runs at the mugged gaps or attack the seams with two man route combos before the deep defenders can rotate over. Man beater concepts with immediate releases can also expose the sim if the offense throws before the zone defenders settle into their landmarks.

Usage Tips

Use this out of obvious passing situations on second or third and medium when quarterbacks are trained to expect a blitz off the Mug look and throw into the flat quickly. Show the double mug pre-snap to bait the quarterback into a hot route or quick game read, then let the sim disguise sell the blitz until the ball is snapped. Pair this with Blitz Loop 3 or Blitz Loop 0 from the same set so offenses cannot key on the mugged corner alignment as a blitz tell, since both bring actual pressure from similar look. Sim off zone drops and stay patient with the stick before jumping any route, especially against play-action, since biting too early opens up shot plays over the top. Best used on early downs against run heavy personnel or on third and long when you want to bait a hot throw while still dropping enough defenders to erase easy completions underneath.
