PA FB Flat runs off an I Form fake handoff to hold the linebackers before releasing the fullback into the flat as the safety valve. Off the play fake, the outside receiver runs a deep vertical (red route) to stretch the deep coverage, while the two inside routes work a corner route and a square-in/dig underneath from the Slot Flex alignment. The primary read starts with the vertical shot if the play fake pulls the safety down, then progresses to the corner route against zone drops, and finally checks down to the fullback in the flat as the hot outlet against blitz pressure or when the deep routes are covered.
Defensive Reads
Diagnose the coverage shell before the snap: two deep safeties signal zone drops underneath that funnel toward the flat and corner routes, while a single high safety often means man coverage or a run blitz look. Watch the linebacker depth at the snap since PA FB Flat is designed to freeze underneath defenders on the play fake, so a disciplined linebacker who does not bite takes away the fullback's easy outlet. Key the flat defender or slot cornerback, since a user-controlled defender sitting on the flat route can jump the fullback route and turn it into a turnover. This play struggles against Cover 3 Sky or Cover 4 shells with a hard flat defender, since the corner route and flat route both get squeezed by the same underneath zone coverage. Blitz packages that bring pressure off the edge before the play fake resolves are the biggest counter, since the extra rush defeats the play design before the fullback route materializes.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage when defenses are more likely to bite on the run fake from I Form personnel.
Read the safety depth pre-snap: if you see a single high safety creeping up to respect the run, take the shot on the vertical route immediately after the play fake animation.
Hot route the fullback to a quick flat release if you anticipate an edge blitz, since the play fake can slow your own protection and get your quarterback hit.
Pair this play with Double Slants or HB Dive Alert Smoke in the same set to keep defenses honest, since both plays start from the same I Form Slot Flex look and punish defenders who key run or overplay the flat.
Against man coverage, prioritize the corner route as your first real progression since the vertical and corner combo creates natural separation versus trailing defenders.
