Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check linebacker depth and alignment: stacked or crashing linebackers signal a run blitz that this power scheme can actually exploit if you get a hat on a hat at the point of attack. Watch safety rotation before the snap: a single high safety with both corners playing off suggests the defense is selling out against the pass and leaving the box light for this run. Post-snap, key the playside defensive end and outside linebacker reaction to the fullback lead block, if they crash hard inside the HB should bounce it outside the double team. This play struggles against heavy run blitzes with extra defenders stacked in the box or user-controlled linebackers flowing downhill immediately at the snap. Cover 0 and Cover 1 man looks with an extra run defender near the line will shut this down quickly, so have a quick-hitting pass check ready if you see those looks pre-snap.
Usage Tips
Run this play on early downs like first and ten or second and short to stay ahead of the chains and keep defenses honest against your pass game. Check the box count pre-snap: if the defense has six or more defenders stacked in the box, consider audibling to a bubble screen or Double Slants out of this same set instead. Use manual control on the fullback lead blocker to seal the edge defender or force him inside so your HB can bounce it outside for extra yardage. Pair this play with PA FB Flat or PA Dagger later in a series so the linebackers who bit on the fullback dive start respecting the run fake and open up play-action shots downfield. Against aggressive gap-shooting fronts, use a hard count or motion check to bait linebackers out of position before the snap.
